  • 5 medium/large apples (Granny Smith & Macoun)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/41/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Homemade pie crust or biscuit dough

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them. Toss in a bowl with brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Roll out your homemade dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick and cut into circles.
  3. Place a spoonful of the apple mixture in each circle, fold over to form half-moon shapes, and seal edges with fingers or a fork.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat; fry hand pies for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  5. Drain on paper towels and serve warm with optional powdered sugar.
